In a study of the stars produced from the exposure of G 5 nuclear emulsions to 17 Bev/c pi /sup -/ mesons, a number were observed with emission of hammer'' tracks with a production rate of 1.1%. A measurement of the track lengths show that 97% are caused by Li/sup 8/ and Li/sup 9/. The energy distribution in the laboratory system behaves according to the evaporatbon theory for fragments with energy below 40 Mev. The theoretical evaporation curve was calculated, and it was found that the parameters giving the best agreement with the experimental results are T = 8 Mev, V= 8 Mev, and p = 0.0015 x c. For the same fragments, the isotropic angular distribution in the center of mass agrees with that predicted by the evaporation theory. Fragments with energy above 40 Mev are more numerous than theory predicts. No noticeable difference was found between the emission of Li/sup 8/ and Li/sup 9/ from interactbons with 25-Bev/c protons and interactions with 17-Bev/c pi /sup -/ (J.S.R.)
