SILICA-ALUMINA RADIOACTIVE LOGGING

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4832914
A neutron-gamma ray logging system is designed for determining the structural character of earth formations by means of measurements of delayed gamma radiation from Al/sup 28/ and Na/sup 24/ produced by fast neutron bombardment of Si and Al, respectively. The system comprises a source of neutrons of energy >2.7 Mev, a gamma-ray detector shielded from the source, means for moving the system in a well bore at such a speed that the delayed gamma rays are detected at any one point approximates 1 min after cessation of neutron bombardment, energy discriminating means for producing signals proportional to radiation from Al/sup 28/ and Na/sup 24/, and means for recording the ratio of the signals as a function of depth within the well bore. The system will provide indication of the SiO/sub 2/ (e.g., sand) and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ (e.g., clay) content of the stratum and thus give a measure of the permeability of the stratum and its tenacity for petroleum fluids.
