IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO RADIOACTIVE WELL LOGGING

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4112688
An improved method of neutron-gamma ray well logging is patented, in which the adverse effect of Cl on the detected gamma -ray signal may be neutralized or the presence of oil or salt water in the earth formations along the well bore may be indicated. An elongated housing, which contains a neutron source and 2 radiation detectors, is passed through a bore hole. Neutrons and neutron-induced gamma radiation are detected. In one aspect of the method, the effect of Cl on the neutron-induced gamma -ray H-content signal is neutralized by gamma -rays produced by intercepting thermal neutrons in the vicinity of one detector. In another aspect, one of the detected signals is indicative of the presence of H and Cl in the bore hole, and the other signal is indicative of only H. From these signals, quantitative infornration of the Cl and H content of the formation surrounding the bore hole may be obtained. Details of the apparatus and the various aspects of the method are presented. (M.P.G.)
