A method and apparatus to determine the presence of gas and oil in a substrata reservoir by radioactive means is patented. Formations adjacent to a bore hole are irradiated with neutrons, and the gamma rays generated by the neutron bombardment are detected and recorded. Two energy ranges of gamma rays are detected, one above 1.5 Mev and the other above at least 4 Mev. A comparison of the energy levels detected permits exact identification of the substrata formations. Methods of identification and the circuitry are described in detail. (M.P.G.)
