RADIOACTIVITY WELL LOGGING FOR CARBON DETERMINATION

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4110766
A method of analyzing each formations in a bore hole for the presence of C, using fast neutrons is patented. The formation along a bore hole is irradiated with neutrons from a well-logging instrument having an energy range from 4.8 to 6.5 Mev. Inelastically produced gamma rays of the order of 4.43 Mev are selectively detected as an indication of the presence of C in the formation. The hydrocarbon content of the formation may be determined by separately detecting the fast neutrons transmitted from source to detector through the formation. This signal is proportional to the number of H nuclei in the formation. A plot of the gamma ray signal with the neutron signal in correlation with the position of the well-logging instrument provides a quantitative indication of the hydrocarbon content. Details of the well-logging instrument are described along with several variations in the method. (M.P.G.)
