NOTES ON THE PROBLEM OF THE TRANSPLANTATION OF BONE MARROW IN DOGS

Results are presented from an experimental study prompted by previous unsatisfactory results with the transplantation of bone marrow in higher mammals. The experiments were carried out in 15 dogs (eight experimental animals and seven controls). Five dogs exposed to fractionated whole-body supralethal gamma irradiation with a dose of 900 to 1,200 r, werc treated by transfusion of a bone marrow suspension from genetically distant donors, in amounts of on an average, 11 days after irradiation. The control dogs, to which bone marrow was not administered, died somewhat sooner. In both groups the course of the post- irradiation period presented a picture of acute radiation sickness. Three dogs exposed to a single whole-body dose of Co/sup 60/ received autologous bone marrow. This was therapeuticallycally effective and the animals are still alive five months later. Their general clinical condition and the laboratory findings are again normal. The two controls died within 18 days after irradiation. (auth)
