EFFECTS OF GAMMA RADIATION ON ISOLATED SURVIVING ARTERIES AND THEIR VASA VASORUM

The effects of irradiation wlth Co/sup 60/ on l36 swine and dog carotld arterles were studled in vitro, utilizing an angioplethysmokymographic technlque. In 20 to 40% of the specimens a sllght vasoconstriction of the arterial wall was observed. This began and was completed wlthln the flrst 60 sec of lrradlation. Mounting the tlssue ln mineral oil did not prevent this reactlon. Marked reductlons ln vasa vasorum flow were observed ln swine carotids (70% decrease) and dog carotids (50% decrease) exposed to 9390 r of gamma radiation during l5 min. Less marked, although signlflcant, decreases ln vasa vasorum flow were seen ln swlne arteries exposed to 3000 r, 2085 r, and l500 r. No significant decreases were observed ln 24 arteries exposed to 843 r. Swine arterles exposed to 9390 r, while mounted ln mineral oil, did not show a significant decrease ln vasa vasorum flow. It ls concluded that the contractlon of the arterlal wall was a direct effect of radiation upon the vascular smooth muscle and that the observed decrease ln vasa flow was probably secondary to ionlzatlon of the Tyrode's solution surroundlng the artery.
