REGIONAL BLOOD FLOW OF THE CEREBRAL CORTEX DETERMINED BY KRYPTON

A new method for determining regional blood flow ln tls sue by means of the lnert radloactlve gas Krypton/sup 85/ ls presented. The method has been applied on the exposed cerebral cortex of anesthetlzed rabbits, cats, and dogs. The radiolsotope Kr/sup 85/ , a weak beta emltter, was dlssolved ln saline whlch was then lnjected lnto the carotid artery of the hemlsphere to be studled. The rapld uptake and slower clearance of the lsotope was recorded from a small area of the exposed cortlcaI surface, about 1 mm ln depth. The theory of analyzlng the clearance curves and of calculatlng the average regional cortlcal blood flow ln ml per gram per minute ls described. The method requires constant blood flow in the tissue during the measurement (about 5 min). It may, however, to some extent be used for studles of acute changes ln perfuslon. It ls also posslble to use lt ln a contlnuous fashion. It has been posslble to confirm and to study in quantltative terms the correlation between arterial; carbon dloxlde tenslon or cortical functional actlvity, and the reglonaI cortlcal blood flow. The method ls simple to use and permlts repeated measurements ln the same experlment with mlnlmal lnterference with the functionaI actlvlty of the braln. The method may readily be adapted for studles ln man. (auth)
