BEHAVIOR OF THE TRANSFUSED CELLULAR ELEMENTS OF BONE MARROW IN X-IRRADIATED GUINEA-PIGS (ENGLISH TEXT)

A saline suspension of bone marrow from adult guinea pigs was injected intravenously into another adult guinea pig that had been given 550 r of whole- body x irradiation. In order to identify the injuries to the injected cells, the bone marrow elements to be transfused were labeled with radioactive phosphorus. On the 5th day, after transfusion, proliferations of myeloid cells consisting chiefly of erythroblasts were found in the spleen. By the 10th day, myelopoiesis in the spleen and regeneration of bone marrow were extensively seen. In the irradiated animals without transfusion of marrow elements, no hematopoietic recovery in the spleen or in the bone marrow was observed until the 10th day. After transfusion of bone marrow cells, the restoration of erythropoiesis preceded that of granulopoiesis in both spleen and bone marrow of irradiated animals. Ectopic myelopoiesis in the spleen and regeneration of bone marrow were also seen when bone marrow cells of a guinea pig treated by heating at 50 deg C for 30 min were transfused. In such instances, however, hematopoietic recovery was much less than in the case of transfusion of intact bone marrow. It was concluded that even if the bone marrow were severely injured by radiation, the transfused marrow cells accumulated in the spleen and bone marrow could proliferate. At the same time, proliferation of the transfused marrow cells in the spleen and bone marrow eontribute to regeneration of myeloid tissue in x- irradiated animals. (Abstr. Japan Med. 1: No. 12, 1961)
