Groups of young adult (C57L x A)F/sub 1/ mice were subjected to several dlfferent treatments includlng 690 rad wholebody x radiation, unilateral nephrectomy and no irradiatlon, 690 rad followed by unilateral nephrectomy l hour later, unilateral nephrectomy followed by 690 rad 3 hours later, and unllateral nephrectomy followed by 690 rad 48 hours later. The mlce were examlned l year or l8 months later for kidney neoplasms. The group nephrectomized and irradiated 3 hours later showed a high lncldence (lO out of l9) of kldney adenomas, as compared with none ln the mlce irradiated only, or nephrectomlzed only. In addltion, a high incldence (11 out of 15) of tubular and Bowman's capsule proliferations was observed in the mlce subjected to irradiation first and nephrectomy 1 hour later. These proliferatlons are considered to be early stages ln the development of the frank renal adenoma. The findings suggest that the occurrence of renal neoplasms ln these x-irradiated mice was greatiy increased as a consequence of the interaction of the speciflc prollferative stlmulus (unllateral nephrectomy) on radiation-altered kidney cells.
