A method is given for reducing reaction between reactor coolant and fuel elements in case of sheath leaks in a gascooled reactor. The method comprises mixing a minor proportion of a gas inert to the fuel with the coolant gas so that, in event of leaks, the inert gas builds up around the exposed fuel and eventually stops the reaction. For a CO/sub 2-/ cooled reactor, the presence of 0.l to l% He in the coolant limits the formation of oxide on a uranium fuel member to a tolerable level. (D.L.C.)
