NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4781600
In a gas-cooled reactor having a closed coolant circuit, fuel elements consist of a fuel member enclosed in a protective sheath and the coolant gas which reacts with the fuel members has minor proportions of a gas inert to the fuel members. Should a leak occur in the sheath of a fuel element, coolant gas enters the sheath, contacts the fuel member, and reacts in a progressively slower manner as the build-up of inert gas increases. A layer about the exposed fuel member is formed and prevents further reaction between the main coolant gas and fuel member. For example the carbon dioxide coolant of a reactor includes between 0.1 and 1.0% of helium by weight. (NPO)
