A method of detecting leaks in nuclear fuel elements consisting of fuel rods enclosed individually in protective sheaths and located in channels in a gas- cooled reactor so that coolant flows over the elements is described. The protective sheaths that enclose the fuel rods also contain an inert gas. The inert gas in the coolant after it leaves the channel is determined by mass spectrometry. An increase in inert gas concentration in the coolant indicates a leaking fuel element. (M.C.G.)
