OBSERVATION OF RADIOACTIVE AIR-BORNE DUSTS

Journal Article · · Ann. Rept. Radiation Center Osaka Prefect
OSTI ID:4829340
Radioactivity measurements on air-borne dusts are reported for the period after the beginning of the Russian nuclear explosions in Sept. 1961. The debris from nuclear explosions was detected by counting the samples 4 and 10 days after sampling. Debris was first detected in Osaka on Sept. 12, and two abnormal activity increases were observed on Oct. 30 and Nov. 7-8. Autoradiographs of air-bonne dusts collected on large filter papers showed that strongly radioactive particles were present and that the dust activities were non- uniform. Autoradiographs of wild arrowroot leaves and a polyvinyl chloride sheet left outdoors are also reported. Gamnta spectrum studies indicated that the nadioactive elements in the dusts are almost the same as those produced in past H- bomb explosions. The decay characteristics of the dust samples of Oct. 30 and Nov. 7-8 indicate that their activities were produced by the explosions of Oct. 23 and 30, respectively. (D.L.C.)
