BS>Ovaries from newborn C57 black mice or Swiss albino mice were grafted in the anterior chamber of the eye of castrated male and female mice of the same strain as the donor. These ovaries developed up to the cavitary follicle stage in castrated male and up to the formation of corpora lutea in castrated female mice. When similar grafts were made in mice of a different strain of that of the donor, the ovarian tissue was rapidly invaded by histiocytes, granulocytes, and lymphocytes and converted to a solid mass of fibrous connective tissue. These experiments were repeated in recipient C57 black mice irradiated with 3001350 r. Destruction of the grafts was not prevented by doses below 600 r, and above 1000 r the mice died from radiation. After doses of 600-lOOOr the ovaries developed up to the cavitary follicle stage but did not produce corpora lutea or re- establish the estrus cycle. After 35 days the grafts of irradiated mice begin to degenerate and this process is complete by the 43rd day. There appeared to be a relation between the inhibition of antibody production and survival of the grafts by irradiation, and, it is suggested, failure of the grafts by the 35th day may reflect the recuperation of antibody-forming cells from radiation injury.
