IRRADIATION OF OVARIAN GRAFTS. ACTION OF VARIOUS DOSES OF X RAYS ON THE SUCCESS OF INTERRACIAL BREPHOPLASTIC GRAFTS OF OVARIES IN MICE

Ovaries of newborn mice were grafted to the anterior chamber of the eye of castrated adult mice of the same strain as the donors. These ovarian grafts in female recipients successively developed follicles and corpora lutea; however, such grafts in males formed follicles but not corpora lutea. In contrast to these results with isologous grafts, different results were obtained with homologous grafts. When ovaries of newborn albino (Swiss) mice were transplanted to the eye of black (C57B1) castrate female mice, lymphocytic invasion of the graft occurred within a few days and it degenerated. The effect of irradiation of these recipients with 300 to 1350 r 2 days before transplantation was investigated. Doses of 600 to 1000 r allowed such grafts to develop up to the stage of forming follicles, but they did not form corpora lutea and degenerated after the 35th day. (H.H.D.)
