SOLID SOLUTIONS OF SODIUM AND POTASSIUM HYDRIDES IN THE HYDROXIDE (in Russian)

Thermal analysis and x-ray analysis were used to investigate the phase diagram for NaH- NaOH mixtures at elevated temperatures. The initial materials were prepared by directly hydriding sodium and potassium metals, and by dehydrating NaOH and KOH at 500 deg C. It was found that the NaH-NaOH system holds about 60% NaH, and that the KHKOH system holds about 48% KH. There is rapid thermal decomposition at higher hydride contents. Solid solutions containing a lower hydride content are stable at 600 to 650 deg C. The hydride does not react with the hydroxide up to 600 deg C, but breaks down by thermal decomposition with the evolution of Ha: 2MeH = 2Me + H/sub 2/. The hydroxide stabilizes the decomposition of the hydride. For example, a solution containing 18.5% NaH retained 12.4% NaH after heating to 530 deg C, and a solution containing 20% KH had 17% KH left. The pure hydrides decomposed at 421 and 428 deg C, respectively. Thus, a solution of the hydride in the hydroxide can the used as a reductant for refractory compounds. (TTT)
