A control rod assembly is designed with a shock absorber on its lower end and with means for indicating when the shock absorber is inoperative. The means comprises a support rod coupled to the assembly by means of shear pins; impact is absorbed by a buffer which breaks the shear pins, and the inoperativeness of the absorber is indicated by the slack of the lifting cable.
