IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO SHOCK ABSORBERS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4814175
A shock absorber is designed for absorbing longitudinal impact shocks in reactor control rods being dropped within a reactor. The shock absorber comprises a buffer member with one end projecting from the control rod and the other end being tapered and projecting into a deformable sleeve attached to the rod. When an impact shock is received by the rod, the retaining members holding the buffer to the rod are broken and the tapered end of the buffer is driven into the sleeve to dissipate the impact energy.
