A shock absorber is designed for absorbing an impact shock on the end of a reactor control rod when it is dropped. The absorber comprises a buffer member projecting from the bottom of the control rod, retaining members connecting the buffer member with the control rod and which is broken on impact, and deformable members (collapsible discs) between the buffer member and control rod which absorb the impact energy.
