Methods for the preparation of alkaline earth metal complexes in dioxan are described. A preliminary attempt to define the extent of this field was made. The visible spectra and relative reactivities towards organic halides of the mono- benzophenone complexes were measured and the results compared with those for the corresponding alkali metal complexes. The linear relationahip between the logarithm of the relative reactivity and 1/(r/sub c/ + 2), (where r/sub c/ is the radius of the cation) which was found previously for alkali metal benzophenones is shown to hold for the alkaline earth metal benzophenones.
