THE RADIATION-INDUCED OXIDATION OF STANNOUS CHLORIDE IN AQUEOUS HYDROCHLORIC ACID

Journal Article · · Ann. Rept. Radiation Center Osaka Prefect.
OSTI ID:4829004

The radioinduced oxidation of stannous to stannic ions in 6 N(bar)HCl oxygen-free solutions was studied with Co/sup 60/gamma radiation. The stannic ion yield was found to be proportional to dose and to be independent of dose rate and initial stannous chloride concentration over a wide range, but it increases when the stannic ion concentration is high or oxygen is present. The oxidation mechanism is discussed. The resuits can be interpreted to mean that the stannous ions are oxidized by OH radicals. The use of stannous ions for dosimetry is suggested. (D.L.C.)
