Gamma-induced oxidation of Sn(II) in aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions was found to be independent of the concentration of Sn(II), Sn(IV), and irradiation time. The "G"-values found in 3N HCl were 1.56 ions Sn(II)/106 ev. This value was independent of acid concentration above 1.5M but decreased at lower acid concentrations. There was a slight dependence of G upon concentration of chloride. This is postulated as being related to changes in activity and oxidation potentials. The mechanism of the reaction is postulated using previously reported reactions. (auth)
