CHEMICAL SEPARATION OF INDIUM$sup 111$ FROM CADMIUM TARGETS AFTER PROTON IRRADIATION WITH A CYCLOTRON
In/sup 111/ of high chemical purity, required for angular correlation measurements of its gamma -cascade, was obtained according to the reaction Cd/ sup 111/(p,n)In/sup 111/ by four- hour irradiation of Cd sheet with protons. In/ sup 111/ was separated from Cd after ihe dissolution of the irradiated sheet in concentrated HNO/sub 3/ by co-precipitation of In/sup 111/ on an In(OH)/sub 3/ deposit from natural In, and by electrolytic deposition of In after twofold reprecipitation (activity yield: 90%). Other methods considered proved unsuited for the preparation of chemically pure In/sup 111/ (from Ag by alpha - irradiation or from Cd by dirradiation). In the reaction used, only short-lived In isotopes and very liitle In/sup 114/ are formed besides In/sup 111/. The radiochemical isolation of In according to E. Jacobi requires numerous reprecipitations and is unsuccessful due to the solubility of Mg(OH)/sub 2/ in ammonium salts. The authors drd not succeed in producing In completely free from Fe by applying Gruverman' s method of Cd/In/sub 111/ separation. Therefore, they dissolved the irradiated Cd sheet in the smallest possible amount of concentraied HNO/sub 3/. Then, they concentrated the solution, added 10 ml of freshly distilled 12% NH/sub 3/, and reprecipitated it by adding a 1-ml solution of In(NO3)/sub 3/ (1 ml = 1 mg ofIn). After centrifuging and dissolving In(OH)/sub 3/ in 2 ml of 10% HNO/sub 3/, precipitation with 2 ml of 12% NH/sub 3/, dissolution of the deposit in 1 ml of 2N HCOOH, precipitation with NH/sub 3/, and dissolution in 0.2 ml of 2N HCOOH, the solution was adjusted to pH = 2 to 3 by means of NH/sub 3/. It was separated on a 10-mm/sup 2/ carbon electrode(Pt anode) within 4 hr with 0.2 ma/mm/sup 2/. (OTS)
