DETERMINATION OF URANIUM IN ROCKS FOLLOWING ITS SEPARATION BY THE BICARBONATE METHOD
From the precipitate of (NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/U/sub 2/O/sub 7/, which is obtained by the action of NH/sub 4/OH on a solution containing uranium, the uranium is usually dissolved by treatment with a carbonat of an alkali metal. However, in the presence of NH/sub 4/OH and Fe. a portion of uranium (about 60%) remains in the precipitate owing to adsorption. It was found that this defect is eliminated in the presence of Th(OH)/sub 4/. In the determination of uranium. prior to the precipitation with ammonia, thorium salt (20 mg thorium per approximately 6 mg uranium) is added to the solution. After 0.5 hr the precipitate is filtered off and dissolved in 50 to 70 ml of hot 5% solution of Na/ sub 2/CO/sub 3/. the solution is acidified with sulfuric acid, treated with a reducing agent, and titrated with 0.005 N solution of dicator. A correction is made for dissolving iron (30 to 40 gamma ).
