THE USE OF RADIATION TREATMENT METHODS TO STUDY RICE GENETICS AND IMPROVE RICE VARIETIES USED IN SOUTHEAST ASIA. Progress Report No. 9

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4828907

Field notes are presented on the characteristics of a large number of wild and cultivated rice varieties from Southeast Asia and West Africa. Studies of the leaf blast resistance of many rice varieties and its hereditary transmittance are reported. X irradiation of rice seeds was found to decrease the plant height and fertility and to increase the chromosomal aberrations in the grown plants. The sterility of radioinduced mutations was also measured for a large number of rice varieties. The effects of fertilization rate on the plant characteristics were studied. (D.L.C.)
