Several varieties of rice were irradiated with x-rays dry seeds, soaked seeds, and young plants. Sterile plants were produced. Seeds taken from sterile plants segregated into fertile and sterile strains in the X/sub 2/, X/sub 3/ and X/sub 4/ genera tions. The induced strains were grouped into five segregation tyoes A, B, C, D, and E according to their mode of segregation. The pollen mother cells of the sterile strains were examined at the meiotic division, a large number of them were found to have quadrivalent and univalent chromosomes. The shape of the quadrivalent chromosomes is predominantly that of a ring though other shapes also occur. Reciprocal translocation of chromosomes at meiotic division was tlte cause of the quadri- and univalent chromosomes. Morphological and physiological changes were observed in the mutated strains but the characteristics were recessive. (TTT)
