CADMIUM SULFIDE $gamma$-RADIATION DETECTORS

Samples of CdS detectcrs with a high Co/sup 60/ gamma -radiation sensitivity were obtained by sublimating CdS powder on a heated conductive base layer which acted as one of the detector electrodes; the second electrode was deposited on a prepared layer of CdS by vacuum vapor deposition. The investigation of several samples gave the following results. A 1.5-cm/sup 2/ photosensitive layer 1 mm thick has an average sensitivity of 100 to 300 mu amp/ r/hr at a 10-v electrode voltage. Certain samples displayed a sensitiviiy of 500 to 700 mu amp/r/hr. There was good linearity in the relationship of photocurrent to gamma -radiation intensity (up to 500 r/hr). The detectors may be useful in dosimetry in cases where their slow response can be tolerated. The comparatively high sensitivity of CdS detectors also makes possible their use for direct recording of photocurrents and in relay circuits without additional amplification. CdS detectors are recommended also as gamma relays in automatic systems operating under the action of gamma or x radiation (an x irradiation with 90 kev increases sample sensitivity to Co/sulp 60/ about 15 times).
