                        A Th/sup 232/-containing fuel element is designed for neutron irradiation to produce U/sup 233/. The element is provided with an outer shield layer to absorb neutrons in the energy range 0.05 to 10.0 ev, thus minimizing neutron absorption by Pa/sup 233/ and improving the breeding efficiency of U/sup 233/ from Th/sup 232/. The shielding material may be Pu isotopes, U/sup 238/, or other fissionable or fertile isotopes. Several embodiments of the fuel element (rod, tube, plate, and assembly) are described. (D.L.C.)
