EFFECTS OF RADIATION AND CHEMICAL MUTAGENS ON GROWTH AND SURVIVAL IN ITALIAN VARIETIES OF DURUM WHEAT

A study was made of the comparative effects of radiations (x-rays, thermal neutrons, fast neutrons) and of three chernical substances ( BETA - propiolactone, ethylene chloride, diethyl sulfate) on seedling growth and plant survival in the field in the durum wheat varieties Aziziah, Cappelli, and RusselIo. It was found that both thermal and fast neutrons are able to inhibit root growth more strongly than shoot growth, while an almost identical degree of growth inhibition is observed in the two systems with x rays and chemicals. Maximum depressing effect was observed in the thermal neutron series. (auth)
