EFFECTS OF RADIATION AND MUTAGENIC CHEMICALS ON GROWTH AND SURVIVAL IN ITALIAN VARIETIES OF DURUM WHEAT

A study was made on the comparative effects of radiations (x rays, thermal neutrons, fast neutrons) and of three chemical substances ( BETA - propiolactone, ethylene chloride, diethyl sulfate) on seedling growth and plant survival in the field in the durum wheat varieties Aziziah, Cappelli, and Russello. In agreement with previous investigations on barley, it was found that both thermal and fast neutrons are able to inhibit root growth more strongly than shoot growth, whilst an almost identical degree of growth inhibition is observed in the two organs with x rays and chemicals. Maximum depressing effect was observed in the thermal neutron series. As to field survival, clear differences between thermal and fast neutrons on one side and x rays and chemicals on the other were seen. Only a fraction of seedlings was able to survive to maturity in thermal neutron treated material. Among the three varieties investigated, Aziziah was found as the most radiosensitive one. No statistical difference in radiation sensitivity was found between Cappelli and Russello. Response to chemicals of Cappelli and Aziziah varied according to type of treatment and effect studied. With ethylene chloride, Cappelli was more sensible than Aziziah ss to seedling growth and more resistant as to field survival. With BETA - propiolactone and diethyl sulfate, Cappelli was more affected than Aziziah in both field survival and seedling growth. (auth)
