EFFECTS OF RADIATION AND CHEMICAL MUTAGENIC AGENTS ON THE GROWTH AND SURVIVAL IN ITALIAN VARIETIES OF DURUM WHEAT

A study was made of the comparative effects of radiafions (x rays, thermal neutrons, and fast neutrons) and of three chemical substances ( BETA - propiolactone, ethylene chloride, and diethyl sulfate) on seedling growth and plant survival in the fieid in the durum wheat varieties Aziziah, Cappelli, and Russello. In agreement with previous investigations on barley (Ehrenberg and Wettstein, 1955; Avanzi, 1960), it was found that both thermal and fast neutrons are able to inhibit root growth more strongly than shoot growth, while an almost identical degree of growth inhibition is observed in the two organs with x rays and chemicals; maximum depressing effect is observed in the thermal neutron series. As to field survival, clear differences between thermal and fast neutrons on one side and x rays and chemicals on the other are seen, if the mature plant-/3-leaf seedlings ratio is taken irto account. Among the three varieties investignted, Aziziah was found as the most radiosensitive one; no statistical difference in radiation sensitivity between Cappelli and Russello was detected. Response to chemicals of Cappelli and Aziziah varies according to type of treatment and effect studied. With ethylene chloride, Cappelli is more sensible than Aziziah as to seedling growth and more resistant as to field survival.
