Iron turn-over rates in the plasma and erythrocytes of the rat were studied at 24 bours after whole-body irradiation with doses of I00 and 200 r using Fe/sup 59/. The iron clearance time of the plasma was prolonged after irradiation, but the plasma turn-over rate/kg body weight/day increased in irradiated rats, due to the elevated plasma iron level. The relative erythrocyte uptake of Fe/sup 59/ was so severely depressed by x irradiation that the erythrocyte iron turn-over rate decreased proportionally as the x-ray doses increased. The Fe/sup 59/ content in the liver 6 days after injection increased in irradiated rats. An exponential relation was generally found between irradiation doses and the changes produced. (Abstr.
