Photolysis of solid ethane at 77 deg K was carried out using a krypton resonance lamp containing a LiF window as the source of 1236 A radiation. The solid was irradiated for 20 min and the volatile products were collected. The hydrogen and methane were analyzed by mass spectrometry. Photolysis of condensed ethane was found to occur with a quantum yield of the same order of magnitude as that for the gas phase. The high quantum yields in the solid strongly suggested that the dissociative lifetime of the excited ethane molecule is comparable to or less than the period of a lattice vibration, 10-13 sec. It was concluded that the predominant primary process in the solid ethane photolysis is an intramolecular H2 detachment.
