EFFECTS OF X-IRRADIATION ON TUMOUR CELLS. II. THE EFFECTS OF X-IRRADIATION ON THE ENZYMES IN THE TUMOUR CELLS OF THE MTK-SARCOMA III
The effects of x rays on the activities of succinic dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase in the cells were studied cytochemically. The activities of the succinic dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase in the tumor cells are localized in the mitochondria in the form of many small granules or grains. When dosages of 200, l000, and 5000 r were given to tumor cells of the MTK-sarcoma III in vivo, the activities of the two enzymes were decreased slightly after high- dose irradiation and the numbers of the granules with the enzyme were increased. These changes disappeared in 3 to 6 hours after irradiation. The destruction of the tumor cells by irradiation was considered to result from the destruction of the enzyme system in the mitochondria of the tumor cells. (Abstr. Japan Med., 1: No. 13, l96l)
