IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4827894
A graphite-moderated gas-cooled reactor is designed so that access to the core through the containment vessel can be had for radioactive decay without waiting. The reactor has a composite radiation shield, comprising alternate layers of mild or boron steel plates and graphite blocks between the moderator structure and part of the containment vessel, and the shield has curved passages for passing coolant to the heat exchanger assembly above the shield. The lower end of the casing containing the core is closed by a similar shield pierced with a lattice of Ybranched fueling tubes. Thus, the two shields prevent the top and bottom of the containmeot vessel from being activated during reactor operation and allow personnel to perform necessary repairs. An alternate construction is also described in which fueling is done irom the top. (D.L.C.)
