A reactor is described in which the calandria tank is supported within the shielding by being suspended from a top shield structure by means of the fuel channels that house the fuel elements and through which coolant flows. The fuel channels include tube parts which extend through passages in the top shield structure and are engaged at their upper ends with the top shield structure by individual arrangements permitting adjustments so that all fuel channels assist in transmitting the load of the calandria tank to the top of the shield structure. The fuel channels also extend freely through passages in a bottom shield structure and the top shield structure is supported by the bottom shield structure. The reactor illustrated is liquid moderated and steam cooled. (M.C.G.)
