A neutron shield is designed for use between the moderator structure and an access region of the pressure vessel in a gas-cooled graphite-moderated reactor. It has passages for coolant flow to the hot header and in each passage a shielding device which allows coolant to pass without substantial pressure drop across the device. The device comprises a rod provided with a plurality of helical fins and may be connected to the fuel elements lying below or to the biological shield plug above. (D.L.C.)
