MEETING WITH EXPERTS ON SOMATIC AND GENETIC RADIATION EFFECTS, MUNICH 1959. Transactions, International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4827684
Ten papers are presented that cover the results of recent studies on the somatic and genetic effects of radiation. Emphasis is placed on dose-effect relations at low levels of radiation exposure. New standards for permissible radiation exposure are considered based on the concept that there is no dose threshold for the induction of some type of somatic damage. New measures of radiation protection are discussed with emphasis on the reduction of gonad dose during diagnostic exposure. Both the hazards and benefits of medical exposure are reviewed. Data are included from a number of studies on the incidence of leukemia and cancer in patients exposed to various levels of radiation. An automatic computer method for population surveys is described and applications in studies on the somatic effects of low doses of radiation are discussed. A procedure is described for the radioautographic study of I/sup 131/ metabolism in rats killed by immersion in liquid nitrogen and maintained in a frozen state while a nuclear emulsion is applied to frozen sections. This method demonstrated an intense gastric secretion of iodine a few minutes after injection, considerable final activity of the hairs and fur, cutaneous fixation, and concentrations of I/sup 131/ in salivary and lachrymal secretions. It is suggested that the systematic examination of the saliva of contaminated persons would give valuable information on body levels. (C.H.)
