RADIOLYSIS OF METHYL DICHLORIDE

The radiolysis of methyl dichloride was studied by determining the total acid formed by gamma irradiation and measured by alkalimetry by the addition of a sufficient amount of water. The amount of the total acid formed was proportional to the radiation dose and dependent on the first order of the dose rate in a vacuum and on the square root in the presence of air. The G-values of (H/sup +/) were greater in air than in a vacuum. The G-values with the addition of benzoquinone in air were found to be as small as those values obtained in a vacuum. With the addition of DPPH ( alpha , alpha -diphenyl- BETA -picryl- hydrazyl), no trace oi acid was found. This suggested that any radical intermediates formed were scavenged by DPPH or any acids formed reacted readily with DPPH molecules. The results of the gamma -ray polymerization of styrene in methylene dichloride at low temperatures are discussed also. (OID)
