A reactor fuel element is designed consisting of a series of tubular fuel segments arranged end-to-end within protective inner and outer sheaths with a space between one end of the segment chain and the adjacent end of the sheaths. A restraint member is provided in the space to prev-ent lengthwise movement of the fuel chain, the member having a limited strength so that it will fail in compression before stressing the sheaths beyond their elastic limit.
