A charge chute is designed for moving fuel elements into and out of a reactor through access tubes. The chute comprises a tubular guide member which is inserted in an access tube, an articulated portion at the inner end of the member which is arranged to cooperate with any one of several fuel channels, actuating means at the outer end of the member which is to align the articulated portion with any desired channel, and inner and outer radiation shields. The outer shield has cooling ducts, and the inner shield comprises one or more plugs. (D.L.C.)
