INFLUENCE OF X-RAY IRRADIATION UPON THE METABOLISM OF PORPHYRIN BODIES. II. THE INFLUENCE OF PRE-IRRADIATIONAL ADMINISTRATION OF AN OXIDATION-REDUCTION AGENT

Several oxidation-reduction agents (GSH, MlEA, AET, vitamins B/sub 1/, B/ sub 2/, and C) were administered separately to healthy guinea-pigs and the amount of porphyrin bodies in the tissues was deternmined. In the case of injection alone, the metalloporphyrin in the liver increased in the early stages, but occasionally its level in the spleen and adrenal gland also increased. In the case of injection followed by x irradiation, the decrease of metalloporphyrin due to the irradiation was considerably inhibited in the early stages, but not in the later stage. Generally the protective effect was well marked on administration of glutathione. There was, however, no apparent difference in effect as between MEA and AET. Vit. B/sub 1/ was most effective and the next so was vit. C. (Abstr. Japan Med., l: No. 13, l961)
