INVESTIGATIONS ON A BIOLOGICAL RADIATION PROTECTION. XLII. THE EFFECT OF 5- HYDROXY-TRYPTAMINE ON RADIOINDUCED MODIFICATIONS OF THE AMINO ACID METABOLISM (in German)

The changes of amino acid metabolism, which are caused by irradiation, are normalized by administration of 5hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) before a sublethal whole body irradiation. The increased excretion of kynurenin, kynurenic acid, anthranilic acid, and xanthurenic acid in the urine decreases. while the decreased excretion of taurine, caused by irradiation, increases. It is believed that the serotonin has a protective effect in those enzyme systems in which the pyridoxal-5-phosphate is active as a co-enzyme. (auth)
