Polarisation of protons elastically scattered by Li7 near the 441 keV resonance
It is shown that the polarization effects in the elastic scattering of 44l-kev protons by Li7 depends on the ratio of the contributions of the two channel spins. The magnitude of this ratio is given by measurements on the Li7 (p, gamma )Be8 process but the sign is not determined. The polarization effects depend on this sign, being large if it is negative and small if it is positive. A shell model calculation indicates that a fit to the energy levels of Li8 is obtained only if the sign is positive and, together with the value of the channel spin mixing ratio, identifies the value of the intermediate coupling parameter for Be8 which is not well determined from the energy levels. It is concluded that the polarization effects in this process are probably less than 5%.
