THE $gamma$-RADIATION OF THE Li$sup 7$(p,$gamma$) RESONANCE AT 441.3 KEV

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
Measurements were made of the intensity ratio, the angular distribution and the alpha - gamma angular correlation of the resonant gamma radiation of the reaction Li/sup 7/(p, gamma )Be/sup 8/. The results, which are in fair agreement with recent values published elsewhere, permit the determination of the channel spin ratio and the three partial gamma -ray widths of thc 17.6-Mev M1 radiation and the Ml and E2 cemponents of the 14.8-Mev transition. While the value for the 17.6Mev component agrees well with calculations using the independent particle model, it is shown that the partial widths of the 14.8-Mev components disagree strongly with the predictions of such a model. It is proposed to explain this discrepancy by the strong collective motion required by the alpha -particle model for the first excited state of Be/sup 8/. (auth)
