EFFECTS OF THE ADMINISTRATION OF SINGLE DOSES OF I$sup 131$ TO SHEEP OF VARIOUS AGES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4823747
Certain metabolic and pathologic effects of the administration of single doses of 1.25, 5.0, or 15 mu c of I/sup 131/ to groups of lambs at 2, 4, and 19 months of age are studied. The metabolic parameters investigated include the effective half-life of I/sup 131/ in the thyroid gland, the ratio of the maximum quantity of I/sup 131/ in the thyroid to the administered dose, and the serum PBI and PBI/sup 131/ values determined serially over a period of 60 days. Pathologic effects in the thyroid range from slight inflammation to extensive necrosis. The calculated radiation dose to the thyroid gland causing mild damage is in the range of 16 to 33 krad. (auth)
