IMPROVEMENTS IN ELECTRIC DISCHARGE APPARATUS FOR PRODUCING HIGH LOCALIZED TEMPERATURES

An apparatus for carrying out thermonuclear reactions is designed which avoids the pinch instability problem by utilizing a periodic discharge. The periodic discharge is produced at a frequency which is a multiple of the cyclotron frequencies of the gaseous ions by a discharge cavity formed between the poles of a magnet producing the magnetic field. The cavity in turn is disposed within a discharge chamber having cavities which have a resonant frequency matched to the motion of the ions of the fusion products and which include electromagnetic couplings adapted to extract electrical energy from the ions at their cyclotron frequency.
