An apparatus is described for heating gas to effect thermonuclear reactions. The apparatus consists of a cylindrical chamber in which the gas is contained; a static axial magnetic field is provided; and a r-f electromagnetic wave is fed axially into the chamber so that a cyclotron electron resonance movement commences and the positive ions gain energy from collisions with electrons. In this way, the apparatus necessary for heating gas for thermonuclear reactions is reduced in size. (D.L.C.)
