A reactor control apparatus is designed which avoids the use of cable. The apparatus comprises a nut member restrained against rotary movement, a neutron-absorbing rod, electromagnetic means for suspending the rod from the nut member, and a screw member engaged with the nut member so that rotation of the screw member results in axial movement of the nut member and hence the rod. For emergency shutdown, the electromagnetic means is deenergized to uncouple the nut from the rod and thus allow the rod to fall into the core. (D.L.C.)
